Anthropic Makes Claude Code’s Auto Mode The Default For Coding Tasks

Anthropic is moving toward making auto mode a default in Claude Code, which means that the AI coding tool will be granted even more freedom to make any necessary changes and execute coding tasks without the need for developers to give their approval every single time.

The idea is that developers working on bigger coding projects will be able to use Claude Code more efficiently, as AI coding tools become more independent and start doing bigger chunks of work without a need for developers’ help and involvement.

Claude Code can write and edit code, perform tests and handle development tasks. Anthropic has been putting more emphasis on autonomous coding in recent times by allowing developers to give instructions and let AI handle everything in-between before checking the end result.

Thanks to this update, developers will not have to manually enable the auto mode every time they use Claude Code. It will be a default feature from now on.

It comes as a response to growing competition in the field of AI-assisted coding, as developers rely more and more on AI coding agents to perform certain tasks autonomously.

In addition, the company is also attempting to expand the scope of use of Claude Code in sustained development efforts. The research that the company is conducting on agentic coding shows the use of Claude Code in development efforts which take several hours, with developers giving strategic advice but without going through each piece of code that is developed.

This change would make the work of developers easier because the developers would have less time to approve routine changes and would make Claude Code capable of handling larger portions of the development process without developer’s assistance.

However, with increasing independence, there would be the need to constantly monitor what is happening in the process particularly if the AI agents are doing work with production code or making changes in large portions of code.

This change shows how the future of AI-assisted software development is going to look like – from assisting developers in code writing to planning, constructing, testing and optimizing of software by AI agents.
