Amazon’s Planned Texas Data Centre Could Become US’s Biggest Climate Polluter

Amazon’s upcoming data centre in Pecos County, Texas, may soon turn out to be the largest individual source of climate pollution generated by a power plant in the United States as the firm intends to construct a natural gas power plant at the location to power the data centre.

The power plant is allowed to emit 33 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, which means it will become the largest permitted emitter among all US power plants, according to the report referenced by TechCrunch.

As per Amazon, the data centre will get its power through new on-site generation and will not raise the cost of electricity for Texas families.

It underscores the increasing demand for power associated with AI hardware. Big data centres need a lot of electricity to fuel the underlying computing machines involved in AI.

For Amazon, the problem is that its carbon emissions are already on an upward trend. Amazon has noted an increase of 16% in carbon emissions in the previous year even when the firm has committed itself to carbon neutrality by 2040.

The increasing energy requirements of AI data centers are also pushing technology firms towards generating their own electricity via natural gas in parts of the United States, thus creating concerns about the environmental costs associated with the rapid growth of AI infrastructures.

Amazon claims that its climate goals have not changed at all, although it recognizes the shift in the environment since the time the firm made its climate pledge.

The Texas project thus demonstrates the growing conflict facing the tech industry: While the development of AI infrastructure continues to rise rapidly, the power consumption required will lead to greater environmental impact.
