Michael Fiddelke: Steering Target Through Turbulence as New CEO

Michael Fiddelke officially started working as the Chief Executive Officer of Target on February 1 2026. This is a deal for Target because it is a new beginning. Target is a well known store in America. Michael Fiddelke is taking over at a time. The company is not selling much stuff as it used to. People are buying things differently now. That is making it hard for Target. They are also competing with big stores like Walmart and Amazon. There are some problems, in the community where Target is based in Minneapolis too. Target is really feeling the pressure now. Michael Fiddelke is the Chief Executive Officer of Target and he has a lot of work to do.

Fiddelke is 49 years old. He has been working at Target for 20 years. This is an example of how someone can move up in a company. He started at Target in 2003 as a summer intern. Then he kept getting better jobs. He was in charge of areas like money, products, how things run and people. Now he is the operating officer. He got this job in 2024. Because Fiddelke has been at Target, for long he really understands how the company works. The people who work at Target and the big bosses trust him. Target is lucky to have Fiddelke. He knows Target well.

In the months before he got the job Fiddelke talked about what he wanted to do at Target. He said he wanted to make Target a great place to shop again make the stores and website better for customers and use technology like computers that can think for themselves to make things happen faster. When he was the COO he worked on making things simpler making it easier to get products to the stores and adding services that people can use on their computers or phones. He did all this to help Target keep growing and doing well over time. Fiddelke and his team, at Target are still working on these things like making the customer experience better at Target.

The company is getting a leader because Brian Cornell decided to stop being the CEO after being in charge for more than ten years. Brian Cornell is not leaving the company though he is just going to be the executive board chairman. This means he will still be around to help the leader, Fiddelke when he starts his new job. The people in charge of the company chose Fiddelke because they think he knows the company well and they trust him to make good changes. They like that Fiddelke has been with the company for a time and understands what makes it work. The company is lucky to have someone, like Fiddelke who can make decisions because he knows the company culture so well.

Fiddelke is now in charge of Target at a time. Target has had a drop in sales in the last few quarters. People who watch the market think that Target needs to do something to get people to trust them again. They need to have a plan for what they want to do. The price of Target stock has gone up and down a lot. Some people who invest in Target are not sure if Fiddelke can make the changes that Target needs because he has been with the company, for a long time. Fiddelke is taking over Target when it really needs someone to make things better.

Fiddelke’s few weeks as the CEO of Target have been really tough because of the problems going on near Targets headquarters in Minneapolis. These problems are about how the government’s handling immigration. Fiddelke sent a message to all the employees at Target. He said that he knows people are really hurt by what’s happening. He also said that it is very important for everyone who works at Target and for all the guests to be safe. Fiddelke wants to hear what the people who work at Target think before he says anything for the company. Now a lot of important business people are saying the same thing, as Fiddelke. They want everyone to calm down and talk about these issues in a way.

As he settles into the role, Fiddelke’s challenge is clear: balance the company’s rich heritage with the need for innovation and responsiveness to today’s retail realities. In a world where consumer expectations are rapidly shifting and competitive pressures are relentless, his leadership will be closely watched by investors, employees, and customers alike.
