Washington DC and White House Agree to Scale Back Trump ‘Takeover’ of City Police

Officials from Washington DC and the White House have reached an agreement to scale back the Trump administration’s attempt to take control of the city’s police department.

Under the new arrangement announced on Friday evening, the Metropolitan Police Department of the US capital will remain under the leadership of its current chief, Pamela Smith. This reverses plans to place Terry Cole, the top administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in charge.

The decision means local control over law enforcement in Washington DC will be maintained, avoiding a significant shift in authority toward federal officials.
