Kruti Patel Goyal to Lead Etsy Into a New Era of Growth and Community-Centric Commerce

Etsy Inc. is about to start a new chapter in its history as a worldwide marketplace for handmade and uniquely crafted goods; Kruti Patel Goyal will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. The announcement, marking a big moment for both the company and Goyal herself, represents the move of Goyal into the role currently occupied by long-time CEO Josh Silverman as part of a deliberately thoughtful leadership transition. Having served more than a decade inside the company, Goyal brings a reputation for driving strategic growth, making her appointment a pivotal moment for Etsy amid a changing e-commerce landscape.

Goyal’s rise is a reflection of a long and well-rounded journey through the marketplace ecosystem. Before coming to Etsy, she had a strong underpinning of finance and strategy with stints at Morgan Stanley, General Atlantic, Viacom, and Product (RED). When she joined Etsy back in 2011, she immediately became one of the key authors of the product and marketplace development of the company. Over the years, she took on various leadership roles such as Head of Trust & Safety, Head of Seller Services, and Chief Product Officer-each giving her deep insight into the needs of creators and buyers alike.

In 2022, Goyal was tapped to lead Depop, Etsy’s resale fashion platform, as it became the go-to marketplace for Gen Z. At Depop, she continued to drive product innovation, broaden the platform’s reach, and heighten its competitiveness in the increasingly popular secondhand fashion market. Her work at Depop reinforced her credentials as an exceptional leader comfortable at the nexus of community, creativity, and commerce.

By 2024, Etsy promoted Goyal to President and Chief Growth Officer, a role that gave her responsibility for Product, Engineering, Marketing, Trust & Safety, Member Support, and Operations. With this broad cross-functional mandate came the role of being the central force behind Etsy’s customer experience and expansion strategy. Her eventual appointment as chief executive was the culmination of years of succession planning-a sign that the board had full confidence in her ability to drive Etsy through the next phase.

Goyal assumes the highest position at a very challenging time. For instance, Etsy’s latest quarterly performance paints a mixed picture wherein although revenue beat expectations at $678 million, user activity remains under pressure. Active buyers declined 5% year over year to 86.6 million, while active sellers decreased nearly 11%. Gross Merchandise Sales fell from $2.92 billion to about $2.72 billion. This fall indicates a wider shift in the global e-commerce world, influenced by changing consumer behaviors, increasing competition, and general economic uncertainty.

Yet these challenges also create an opportunity. Goyal’s track record is one of reinvigorating engagement and building sticky, community-driven ecosystems. The nature of her leadership at Depop-a platform renowned for loyalty among its young creators and shoppers-suggests that she may bring stronger brand positioning and renewed product differentiation to Etsy. At the heart of her vision for this new leading role is further solidifying Etsy’s identity as a marketplace of human connection, creativity, and personal shopping experience-values that remain at the heart of its global appeal.

The most significant tasks ahead for Goyal are to refire the growth in the marketplace while maintaining Etsy’s authenticity. Scaling a platform comprising handcrafted, small-batch goods without compromising quality or trust remains an ongoing challenge. At the same time, Etsy must respond to increased competition by major retail platforms, regulatory scrutiny of cross-border trade, and shifting global commerce policies.

Her appointment also holds symbolic value: An Indian-American woman leading one of the most influential creative marketplaces in the world, Goyal represents growing diversity in global corporate leadership. This rise is part of a larger trend of leaders with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds assuming key positions within U.S. technology and commerce. For entrepreneurs and founders, especially from India, she represents how deep expertise, long-term commitment, and cross-functional leadership can result in global impact. Under the leadership of Goyal, Etsy would focus on improving seller tools, increasing international reach, building trust and safety mechanisms, and product experiences to foster emotional attachment among buyers. With a thoughtful succession plan, executive transition stability, and a leader who knows the DNA of the brand inside out, Etsy looks all set for a strategic reset. As the company gears up for a new beginning, all eyes are on how Kruti Patel Goyal balances growth with authenticity, and how, through her leadership, community-driven commerce is taking shape in a fast-changing digital world.
